A Folk Inspired Snowflake Lumi Quilt Made With the Winter Magic Fabric Collection

A Folk Inspired Snowflake Lumi Quilt Made With the Winter Magic Fabric Collection

Today I get to share a quilt that feels like winter in the coziest, most nostalgic way. I used the Winter Magic fabric collection by Dani Mogstad for Riley Blake Designs, and everything about it felt like stepping into a snow globe. Soft blues, warm browns, tiny trees, scattered snowflakes, and prints that remind me of crisp walks outside here in Minnesota.

And of course, I paired the fabric with my upcoming Lumi Quilt pattern, releasing December 2025. Lumi is my love letter to winter, so using Winter Magic felt just right.

A Look at Winter Magic by Riley Blake Designs

If you haven't seen the Winter Magic collection yet, it's packed with charm. Think little winter forests, tiny Scandinavian-inspired snowflakes, gingham, warm taupes, and shades of blue that shift from sky to midnight. There's story in every print.

Here's the storyboard if you want to peek at the whole collection: Winter Magic Fabric Storyboard

I love how each print plays so nicely when you start mixing them together. You really cannot make a wrong choice.

About the Quilt Pattern: Lumi Quilt

Lumi means snow in Finnish, and this quilt really does feel like a snowflake stretched across a quilt top. The medallion star at the center, all the branching shapes, and the movement of the blocks make it feel like the quiet hush of winter settling in.

This Winter Magic version is sewn with a deep navy dot print as the background, which really lets the soft blues and warm tan prints sparkle and pop, like they're in a night sky. I hope it feels Scandinavian and a little woodland at the same time.

The Lumi Quilt pattern will be releasing December 2025. You'll be able to find it in my pattern shop.

Quilting and Thread Details

For the quilting, I used the Swirly Snowflakes pantograph designed by Sew Shabby Quilting. It adds such a pretty layer of texture. Little snowflakes mixed with soft spirals look like flakes floating in the sky like a snow globe.

The thread is Aurifil 40/3 weight in Beige, color 2314. It blends almost everywhere but still gives that tiny bit of sparkle, almost metallic, on the darker background fabric.

The Pieced Backing

I had quite a few leftover scraps from the collection, so I decided to create a pieced backing using a sawtooth star and several blended strips. It's like a second quilt, and I love that it used every little bit of fabric. Backings are such a fun place to play.

Flange Binding for a Finishing Touch

I made a flange binding on this quilt to give it a little extra pop on the edges and wrapped the flange on the backing. I used a Navy Stripe for the main portion and Poparazzi dot in Tea Dye for the flange.

The navy stripe is a perfect little frame and the warm tea dye flange ties in the warm beige prints.

If you'd like to learn to make your own flange binding, I have a step-by-step tutorial available here: Flange Binding Tutorial

Let's Get Quilting!

This quilt was such a peaceful project. There's something about winter sewing that always feels slower and gentler, and this fabric collection brought that feeling out the whole time I was stitching. If you're looking for a winter quilt idea or a pattern that plays well with shades of blue, Lumi Quilt is such a beautiful place to start.

If you make the Lumi Quilt or sew with the Winter Magic fabrics, I would love to see what you make. You can always tag me @remivailstudio on Instagram! Seeing your projects is one of my favorite things.

🧵 Happy quilting!
