A Classic Red and White Lumi Quilt
There is something about a red and white quilt that feels instantly familiar. Comforting. Rooted. This version of my Lumi Quilt leans fully into that feeling, pairing a timeless color palette with a design inspired by winter’s quiet beauty.
Lumi is the Finnish word for snow, a quiet nod to the deep Nordic roots woven into life here in Minnesota. Winter has always felt magical to me. The way the first snowfall softens the world. The way everything grows still. The way the earth settles under a calm white blanket. I wanted to capture that feeling in a quilt, something that could wrap around you with the same quiet shift that winter brings.

The Lumi Quilt Design
The Lumi Quilt is a medallion style design built around a large snowflake, with each branch forming as you sew. I love how the design reveals itself slowly, piece by piece, until the full snowflake comes into view. She feels both crisp and soft at the same time, like stepping outside on a clear winter morning when the world has not yet been touched.
Lumi is written in one size, designed to feel generous and comforting, though borders can easily be added if you want her to grow into something even larger. The pattern is confident beginner friendly and teaches simple, approachable techniques. You will use strip piecing, half square triangles, and snowball corners to bring this snowflake to life.
If you are interested in making your own Lumi Quilt, you can find the pattern HERE.

Why Red and White Quilts Hold So Much History
Red and white quilts have a long history in American quilting. Traditionally, they were often made from turkey red fabrics paired with muslin, creating high contrast designs that showcased strong piecing and bold geometry. These quilts were practical, striking, and meant to last.

What I love most about red and white quilts is their timelessness. They feel vintage without feeling old. They carry a sense of tradition while still looking fresh and graphic. Using this palette for Lumi felt like a natural pairing. The strong contrast highlights the snowflake shape beautifully and gives the quilt a cozy, heirloom quality.

Fabric Choices for This Version of Lumi
For this quilt, I used the Radiant Ruby fabric collection designed by Dani Mogstad for Riley Blake Designs. The collection is full of cheerful reds and soft whites, with a lovely mix of scale and pattern that adds depth without overwhelming the design.

Flange Binding Details
I finished this quilt with a flange binding, which felt like the perfect detail for a red and white quilt. It adds a subtle frame and a bit of polish without distracting from the design.
-
Main binding fabric: Schoolhouse Red Tina Bee Gingham, cut on the bias
-
Flange fabric: Schoolhouse Confetti Cotton
Both fabrics are from Riley Blake Designs.

Quilting and Finishing
I longarmed this quilt myself using my Juki Miyabi J-350QVP. For the quilting design, I chose Swirly Snowflakes by Sew Shabby Quilting. The soft curves echo falling snow and add movement without overpowering the piecing.

A Quilt Meant to Bring Quiet Wonder
My hope is that as Lumi Quilt blankets your home, she brings the same sense of quiet wonder that winter brings to mine. Whether folded over a railing, draped by the fire, or wrapped around your shoulders, this quilt is meant to feel steady, calm, and comforting.
