This project has been sitting in my WIP pile since the end of last year.
I picked it up at a time when I just wanted to sew for fun. Nothing too big. Nothing I had to think too hard about.
The Patchwork Duffle Mini pattern by Knot and Thread felt like just the right fit. Functional, a little playful, and something I knew I’d actually use, alot.

I had been holding onto this Selvedge Magic Icons fabric from Ruby Star Society for a bit, waiting for the right project. All of those little illustrations already felt complete, a patchwork that had been thoughtfully arranged like a story.
I didn’t want to break that apart. I just wanted to work with what was already there.
The Fabric
The Selvedge Magic Icons fabric is a panel, even though it looks like patchwork. Each box is printed to resemble individual pieces, which makes it perfect for something like this.
I paired it with a few coordinates:
Empire Yellow (Pure Solid by Art Gallery Fabrics) for the lining
Starry in Multi Mini (Ruby Star Society) for the accents
That sunshiney yellow is one of my favorite parts. It’s such a small detail, but it shifts everything the moment you open the bag.
The Pattern
The Patchwork Duffle Mini pattern by Knot and Thread is really straightforward and comes together pretty quickly.
When sewing the end panels, I’d definitely recommend having plenty of clips nearby. That step can get a little tricky, but taking a minute to get everything situated first makes it much easier to manage.
The Mini pattern doesn’t include instructions for an adjustable strap, but I wanted one to make it more practical for everyday use. I used the strap instructions from the full-size Patchwork Duffle pattern to add it in.
If you don’t have that pattern, there are plenty of tutorials online, and it’s a very doable addition.
Quilting & Thread
Because the fabric already looked like patchwork, I leaned into that and quilted around each of the little boxes to help them stand out.
I used byAnnie’s Soft and Stable in place of batting to give the bag more structure and dimension. It helps the bag hold its shape while still feeling soft.
For thread, I used Aurifil 28 wt #2479 Medium Orchid for all of the quilting and topstitching. It’s a bright pink that shows up beautifully against the fabric and adds just the right amount of contrast.
Since it’s a thicker thread, the stitches show up more, which is exactly what I was going for. It also adds a bit of strength, which is helpful for a bag that’s going to get regular use.
I used that same thread throughout the entire bag, for the quilting, handles, strap, zipper tabs, and binding. It’s always nice when one thread can carry a project all the way through.
In the bobbin, I used Aurifil 40 wt #2026 Chalk, which you’ll see on the inside of the bag.
The Details
There are always a few details that end up being favorites.
The fabric-covered webbing on the straps
The binding on the inside
The way the quilting gives each illustration its own frame
And the stripey zipper tape from Sallie Tomato adds just a little extra playful element. I also used Sallie Tomato hardware for the handles, which pulls everything together in a really clean way.
Nothing complicated, just small things that make it feel finished.
Fabric Bundle
I put together a fabric bundle for this bag if you’d like to make your own. You can find it here.
It includes:
The Selvedge Magic Icons panel
Empire Yellow for the lining
Starry in Multi (larger scale stars) for the accents
I also included an extra 1/4 yard of the accent fabric in case you’d like to add the adjustable strap.
Aurifil Artisan Challenge
This project also became my finish for this month’s Aurifil Artisan Challenge, which was to complete a work in progress.
This one had been waiting quietly for a bit.
It felt really good to come back to it, ease into it again, and finally see it through.
If You Want to Make One
This is a great project if you just want to enjoy the process for a bit.
Let the fabric lead. Add some texture. Pay attention to the small details.
And at the end, you have something you’ll actually reach for. That always feels like a win.
Happy sewing,
xo, Tamara
