Cozy Quilts for the Modern Home by my dear friend Abby Luchsinger released on January 27th, and I’m so happy to be joining her virtual book tour celebrating her and this thoughtful collection of projects.

I chose to make the Watercolor Hearts Quilt, one of the four winter projects included in the book. It felt like the right project for this moment, something cozy, familiar, and comforting to work on while the days are still short and the ground is snowy.
About the Book
Cozy Quilts for the Modern Home includes 16 projects total, four for each season, with a mix of quilts and smaller quilted makes. As I flipped through the book, I kept thinking about how usable everything felt. These are projects you can picture living with, not just finishing.

I adore the layered heart construction of the Watercolor Hearts Quilt. It felt calm and approachable, graphic without being loud, and resonated with the connection I think we all desire with each other at a heart level.

Making the Watercolor Hearts Quilt My Own
The original pattern uses nine fabrics plus a background for the quilt top. I decided to work with five fabrics instead and repeat them throughout the quilt. As the blocks came together, the repetition started to feel grounding, letting the colors settle in and soften next to each other.
The fabrics I chose were a mix of yarn dyed wovens in linen and cotton from Fableism Supply Co., Robert Kaufman, and Tilda. Even before washing, I could tell these were going to soften beautifully.

I also turned two of the columns upside down so the quilt would be nondirectional. Just a small shift that improved the way the limited palette worked.

Quilting and Finishing Details
I longarmed the quilt using the Held Hearts pantograph designed by Longarm League, stitching with Aurifil 40/3 weight thread in the color Muslin. The quilting adds gentle movement across the surface and echoes the heart shapes without calling too much attention to itself.

For the binding, I went with a tiny red polka dot. It felt playful but still subtle, and I liked how it tied back to one of the smaller scale prints inside the hearts. It’s one of those finishing details that quietly holds everything together.

I got one quick photo of the finished quilt before it demanded crinkles and jumped in the wash machine.

A Quilt That Went Straight Into Use
After washing, this quilt didn’t get folded away or saved for later. It went straight into everyday life. The yarn dyed wovens softened into that crinkly, familiar texture that makes a quilt feel instantly at home.
Corduroy approved immediately.

Seeing him curled up on it felt like the most natural beginning. This quilt was never meant to be precious or tucked away. It was made to be used, loved, and lived with, and it found its place right away.

If you’re following along with the virtual book tour, I hope you’ll take a look at Cozy Quilts for the Modern Home. Abby has created a collection that feels warm, thoughtful, and deeply usable, the kind of book that makes you want to sit down and start sewing.
