Boo Quilt: A Sweet and Spooky Halloween Quilt Featuring Hey Pumpkin Fabric

Boo Quilt: A Sweet and Spooky Halloween Quilt Featuring Hey Pumpkin Fabric

A modern ghost quilt made with Riley Blake Designs' Hey Pumpkin fabric collection designed by My Mind's Eye Inc.

There’s something magical about Halloween sewing—it’s playful, nostalgic, and just plain fun. This year, I couldn’t resist stitching up the Boo Quilt by The Pattern Basket, when I found out I'd be using the Hey Pumpkin fabric collection for my monthly Riley Blake Designs project. And let me tell you… this ghost quilt is going to turn up the cuteness factor on spooky season this year! 💗

The Hey Pumpkin fabric collection by My Mind’s Eye for Riley Blake Designs is packed with pink ghosts, dancing skeletons, candy corn, and twinkly stars—all in the happiest Halloween palette-orange, black, and blush. Yes please!

A Halloween Quilt That’s Just for the Joy of It

I didn’t plan to start a Halloween quilt in the spring, but the moment this fabric landed in my studio, I was in. ✂️

Each ghost in the Boo Quilt pattern feels like her own little character. There’s the candy corn cutie 🍬, the pink starry dreamer 🌟, and the trick-or-treat rebel in black and orange 🧡🖤. Once I began piecing, I couldn’t stop. The ghosts kept multiplying—sixteen in all!

Boo Quilt Project Details 👻

Quilt Pattern: Boo Quilt by The Pattern Basket
Fabric Collection: Hey Pumpkin by My Minds Eye Inc for Riley Blake Designs
Thread: Aurifil 40/3 wt in 2311 Muslin for longarming, 50 wt for piecing
Pantograph Design: Stellar Stars by Sew Shabby Quilting
Batting: Wool (always my go-to for that soft, lofty puff)
Quilting: Longarm quilted by me on my Juki Myabi J-350QVP

If you're looking for a ghost quilt pattern packed with personality, this one's a winner. It’s especially fun if you love playing with fabric placement and giving each block its own vibe.

There's another adorable ghost quilt that I can't wait to make called Hey Betty Boo by Ann Skaehill of Crafty Moose Quilts. I also have some cute woven quilt kit options for it in my shop. Check out those details HERE.

Quilting and Texture: Adding Movement and Magic

For the quilting, I used the Stellar Stars pantograph, which creates swirls and spirals that look like a breeze on a crisp October night. It gives the quilt so much movement and makes the little ghosts feel like they’re floating. ✨

Pairing that with wool batting gave the whole quilt a cozy, dimensional feel—my favorite combo when I want a little texture without the weight.

Binding Details: Stripes and Flange for the Win 🎀

Let’s talk binding. I used a classic Halloween stripe from Riley Blake Designs (cut on the bias, of course!) to add a candy cane swirl around the edge. And because I always love a little extra detail, I tucked in a flange using one of Riley Blake's Poparazzi Basics prints.

From far away, the flange looks like a clean little frame. But up close? It’s the cutest dot texture, and it adds just the right pop of contrast.

They’re easier than you think, and they add such a beautiful detail. 🧵

The Finishing Touch: A Hand-Embroidered Quilt Label 💗👻

Every quilt tells a story—and I love adding a hand-stitched quilt label as the final chapter.

For my Boo Quilt, I embroidered a little smiling ghost, complete with twinkling stars, and pink cheeks. ✨ I stitched it up using Aurifil Floss in the following colors:
🧵 2437 Light Peony
🧵 2220 Light Salmon
🧵 4241 Very Dark Grey

I'll be sewing it onto the back of the quilt next—and honestly, it feels like the perfect, heartwarming send-off for this playful project. 🧡

If you've never added a hand-stitched label before, it's such a meaningful (and surprisingly fun!) way to personalize your quilts. I get a ton of joy out of slow stitching a quilt label at the end of each project. Plus, it becomes a little piece of history for future hands who might someday hold your quilt.

Halloween Quilting Tip: Start Early 🎃

If you’re wondering why I’m making a Halloween quilt months before October, here’s a behind-the-scenes secret: fabric companies release seasonal collections early for quilt shops

If you want to grab your favorite prints—especially for Halloween—you’ll want to shop now before fall rolls around. ✂️

(And really, who says ghost season can’t be all year long?)

This quilt was just pure sewing joy—a reminder that not every project has to be big or serious. Some quilts can just be playful and sweet, stitched simply because they make you smile. 💫

Thanks so much for following along with this month's Riley Blake Designs project—and happy Halloween sewing, no matter the season!
