The Folk Fables Quilt Pattern was born from my deep love of storytelling through fabric and thread, scrappy quilts, and the basics—no little pieces, easy cutting and construction, and the hum of my sewing machine.
I wanted a place for the quiet, meaningful narratives woven through scraps of fabric passed down from a grandma's stash, saved from a loved one's clothing, leftovers from beloved projects, or a cherished fat quarter bundle. But story doesn’t only live in scraps. It can be found in intentional color choices, the fabrics that remind you of a person or a season, or the quiet rhythm of making something from start to finish.
With long, simple strips and a block-based layout designed to be fat quarter and scrap friendly, Folk Fables is built for the beginner or seasoned pro and ready for storytelling. No two quilts will ever look alike, even with the same bundle, making it so special.
A Scrap Friendly Quilt That’s Quick to Sew and Easy to Love
The Folk Fables Quilt is built around long strip piecing and simple blocks, making it a fast, satisfying sew—even if you’re new to quilting. With minimal seams to match and lots of flexibility with fabric layout, it’s a pattern that celebrates play over perfection.
This is the kind of quilt you can finish in a weekend, or pick up in pockets of time between the rest of life. It’s scrappy by nature, but structured enough to look intentional, cozy, and heirloom-worthy. Whether you’re working with leftover wovens, treasured prints, or your favorite solids, the design adapts beautifully to your personal style.
I designed the pattern to be fat quarter and scrap friendly, with five sizes included: baby, throw, twin, queen, and king.
Tips for Choosing Fabric for Your Folk Fables Quilt
One of the most satisfying parts of this pattern is how flexible it is when it comes to fabric. But that flexibility can also feel a little overwhelming—so here are a few tips I’ve found helpful when planning your own version:

Play With Color and Contrast
- Start with 4–5 base colors for structure. This helps your quilt feel grounded while still allowing variety.
- Within each color group, choose fabrics that range from subtle to bold—a mix of solids, tonal prints, and more playful or high-contrast patterns.
- Include a range of values (light to dark) within each color family to create depth and contrast across the quilt.

Add Texture and Personality
- Look for texture—woven, linen blends, or even fabric with a visual texture like speckles or crosshatch prints—to add visual interest and dimension.
- Mix and match intentionally, but leave space for surprise. The quilt becomes more compelling when there's variety in both the fabrics and how they interact.
If you're using wovens like I did, the often earthy tones and natural textures do so much of this work for you right out of the gate.
Fabric Options Included in the Pattern
The Folk Fables Quilt Pattern includes three fabric planning paths, so you can make it your own whether you’re pulling from your stash or cutting into a new bundle:
Option 1: Minimum Fat Quarters
Follow the minimum number of fat quarters listed for your chosen size. This version still has variety, but feels a bit more cohesive and streamlined.
Option 2: Additional Variety FQs
Want to lean into the scrappy vibe? Add more fat quarters than the minimum. The pattern gives you a range to work from, and the extra blocks you make can be pieced into the backing (like I did), or turned into a matching pillow or quilted tote bag—projects that help stretch your fabric even further.
I thought you might like to see my extra blocks pieced into the backing!

Option 3: Scrap Version
Have a stash full of smaller cuts? This version is for you. The pattern includes full instructions on the number and size of scraps you'll need to make a beautifully patchworked top from fabric you already have.
Quilting with Wovens: A Peek at the Cover Quilt
For the cover quilt, I leaned all the way into texture and made the twin size using woven fabrics from Fableism and Art Gallery Fabrics. I love how the soft weave gives the quilt a more natural, almost vintage feel—and the movement in the fabric plays so nicely with the patchwork.
Quilting
I quilted this version myself using the Hexi Petals pantograph from Sew Shabby Quilting, stitched in Aurifil 40/3 weight thread on my Juki Miyabi Longarm. I chose wool batting for extra loft and warmth.
Binding
I framed the quilt with a flange binding—cut on the bias with a Daisies woven and paired with a soft Sprout Woven flange, both from Fableism.

Embroidered Quilt Label
The final touch? A hand-embroidered quilt label stitched with love and intention. Because every quilt has a story—and I wanted this one to carry mine. Coming soon!
Quilt Kits Available
I’ll have two quilt kits available in the Remi Vail Studio shop when the pattern releases—each one chosen with a story in mind.
Pansy Quilt Kit (Cover Quilt) - Twin Size by Remi Vail Studio
The Pansy Quilt Kit is made from the fabrics I used for the cover quilt—soft, earthy wovens from Fableism and Art Gallery Fabrics in warm, grounding tones. I named this version in memory of my grandma, Pansy Violet Rose. While she didn’t teach me to sew, she shaped my life in quieter ways that still grow strong roots: an early love of flowers, a deep connection to the garden, and an appreciation for the kind of beauty that’s soft and steady. Stitching this quilt felt like spending time in her company again—quiet, comforting, and full of meaning.
Spring Meadow Quilt Kit - Twin Size
The second kit, Spring Meadow Quilt Kit, feels like walking through fresh grass with the scent of soil in the air and just a hint of breeze. It’s a mix of spring greens, soft blues, and warm terracotta—fresh but grounded, with colors that feel like a season of growth.
Both kits are curated with woven fabrics and include everything you need to make the Folk Fables quilt top in Twin size plus a few extra blocks. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced maker, they’re designed to support you in sewing your own story into every stitch.
Peony Pedal Quilts - Twin Size Quilt Kit
Allison made this adorable Twin Size Quilt Kit with her son in mind and I couldn't love it more! It's made up of wovens and quilting weight cotton. She even surprised me by finishing a quilt.
Fieldstone Fabric Quilt Kit
Mallory made a beautiful Throw Size Quilt Kit with fabrics from several different Art Gallery Fabric collections designed by Sharon Holland Designs. Two of my all time favorite AGF prints are included, Boteh Flourish and Tiny Dancer. All are quilting weight cottons and the 16 FQs will make a perfect Option 1 (Minimum FQ) Version of a throw size quilt.
