When Aurifil challenged the Artisans to create with at least 3 thread colors, in 2 different thread weights, within 1 unified project, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bring my soon-to-release Maggie Poppins Tote to life. This bag has become an expression of texture, color, and function – a true blend that I hope you find charming and practical. It embodies my passion for quilting and hand stitching.
The 3:2:1 Aurifil Artisan Challenge is designed as an invitation to explore the full spectrum of Aurifil’s thread offerings. For me, it became a chance to elevate the Maggie Poppins Tote with detailed quilting, pops of hand-stitched embroidery, and subtle thread textures that stand out against the cozy, earthy fabrics I chose.
For this project, I curated a palette of Aurifil threads that highlight the warm, natural tones of the fabrics and sweet flower print on the exterior pockets. Each thread was carefully chosen for its role in the construction and decoration of the tote.
Working with 12 wt thread, especially in a sewing machine, brings a unique, bold texture but also requires a few adjustments. Here are some of my go-to tips to help make the process smooth and enjoyable:
Use a Larger Needle: A 90/14 or 100/16 denim/jeans needle works best with 12 wt thread, allowing it to pass through the fabric without breaking.
Adjust Your Tension: You will likely need to increase the top tension to accommodate the thicker thread. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but trust me! Start with small adjustments and test on a fabric scrap to ensure smooth stitching.
Pair with a Thinner Bobbin Thread: To avoid bulk in the seams and to keep the focus on the decorative stitching, I typically use a 50 wt thread in the bobbin when using 12 wt as the top thread.
Slow Down Your Stitching: Slowing down your machine speed gives you more control and helps prevent thread breakage, especially on curves and intricate patterns.
Hold Your Thread Tails: Hang on to those tails during the first few stitches. This keeps them from getting pulled and tangled into the bobbin.
Use a Walking Foot: If your fabric is moving through smoothly the thread is less likely to get hung up and break.
Using these tips allows the 12 wt threads to create crisp, eye-catching stitches, enhancing the structure and design of any project.
Hand-stitching adds a personal, unique texture to any project, and with the Maggie Poppins Tote, I incorporated it to bring dimension and handmade charm to the exterior pockets. Here are my favorite tools and tips for hand-stitching success:
Chenille Needle Size 24: This is my go-to needle for hand stitching, especially when working with thicker threads like Aurifil’s 12 wt or 8 wt. The large eye accommodates heavier threads easily, and the sharp point easily glides through multiple layers of fabric.
Dritz Soft Comfort Thimble: My absolute favorite for hand stitching, this thimble provides control and protection without feeling too bulky. It’s a must when working with thicker threads or dense fabrics.
Kai 3 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors: These scissors are perfect for precision cutting, especially when snipping close to stitches. I love how they handle heavier threads with ease.
Take Your Time: Hand stitching is all about enjoying the process. Slowing down ensures even, consistent stitches and allows you to really focus on creating beautiful details.
I chose Fableism’s Forest Forage and Camp Gingham, and a selection of Ruby Star Society prints like Favorite Flowers Meadow Canvas in Natural and Lattice Kiss. These fabrics feel like stepping into a fall day, with rich, rustic tones that pair beautifully with Aurifil’s threads.
In this quilted tote bag, the main interior and exterior fabrics, as well as all 16 pockets, are fully quilted with a layer of fusible fleece in between. The quilting adds structure and warmth, giving the bag a sturdy feel while preserving the cozy charm of a handmade piece. This quilting not only enhances the design but also makes the bag a functional and beautiful statement piece.
With the official pattern release set for November 14th, the Maggie Poppins Tote showcases not only functionality but also a quilty personality that I hope is hard to resist. The hand stitching in Aurifil Floss, 12 and 8 wt added dimension, making the tote feel lovingly crafted and perfect for anyone who appreciates the nuances of handmade work.
The October Aurifil Artisan challenge was such a fun creative stretch, showing just how much impact threads can have in a project’s design. The variety of thread weights added depth, while the colors brought warmth and vibrancy that echoed the fabric’s earthy feel.
Whether you’re experimenting with embroidery, quilting, or bag construction, I invite you to try something new and see how thread can weave its own little story into the fabric. I hope the Maggie Poppins Tote inspires you to pick up some threads, experiment, and create something that feels like you.
Happy Quilting!
