How I Use Aurifil Threads in My Kicks Quilt
The Kicks Quilt Pattern by Latifah Saafir Studios was the perfect project to showcase the versatility and performance of my favorite Aurifil Threads. Whether I'm piecing, quilting, or adding those final, heartfelt details, Aurifil threads are my go-to choice. Let's dive into how I used them to bring this fun, sneaker-themed quilt to life.
Why I Love Aurifil Threads
Aurifil threads have been a game-changer in my sewing room. Their quality is unmatched, and with so many weights and colors to choose from, there's truly a thread for every step of the quilting process. Whether it's precision piecing or bold hand stitching, Aurifil threads deliver. And let's not forget their durability - my quilts are made to be used, washed, drug around, and loved!
The Threads That Made It Happen
Aurifil 50 Weight
For piecing those intricate sneakers, I used Aurifil 50 weight in #2026 - Chalk. It's thin, strong, and just disappears into the seams. I love how it keeps everything smooth and flat - no bulk, just clean, polished piecing.
Aurifil 40/3 Weight
When it came to quilting, I reached for Aurifil 40/3 weight in #2311 - Muslin. This slightly thicker and stronger thread gave the Bubble Quintuple pantograph design amazing definition. It added texture and dimension without overpowering the playful sneakers.
Aurifil 12 Weight
The finishing touches are always my favorite, and Aurifil's heavier weights make them extra special. I used 12 weight in #2692 - Black to embroider and attach the quilt label. These bold stitches stand out beautifully, adding a personal handmade touch. I feel like it brings just the right amount of texture and charm.
A Few Thread Tips
- Piecing: Stick with 50 weight for crisp, precise seams that stay flat. It's my piecing MVP.
- Longarm Quilting: For defined designs and extra strength, 40/3 weight is a fantastic choice.
- Hand Sewing: Want stitches that pop? Reach for 12 or 8 weight - perfect for hand quilting, binding, and embroidered details.
- Fun Fact: Did you know, the smaller the thread weight number, the thicker the thread?

Bringing It All Together
Aurifil Threads were the unsung heroes in my Kicks Quilt. From piecing to quilting those final details, they helped me bring this quilt to life! This project was so much fun.
Quilts like this are heirlooms. Each stitch, fabric choice, and detail intentionally picked to tell a story that will last for generations. This special quilt was for my brother and I secretly hope his kids will be fighting over it. 😆
