A Beginner Friendly Baby Quilt Using the Front Porch Pattern

A Beginner Friendly Baby Quilt Using the Front Porch Pattern

If you’re looking for a modern baby quilt that feels as cozy as a bedtime story and as sweet as a lullaby, the Front Porch Quilt pattern might be your next favorite make. It’s beginner-friendly, quick to sew, and the perfect project for showing off soft, playful prints like those in the Cozy Bebe fabric collection by Riley Blake Designs.

It brings together playful prints, gentle colors, and soft textures into a timeless heirloom that’s perfect for little ones. Here's a peek behind the seams of this special quilt.

A Baby Quilt Pattern with Charm and Simplicity

The Front Porch Quilt pattern, designed by Quilters Candy, is beginner-friendly and quick to sew, making it a go-to for baby quilts you want to finish in a weekend. The clean layout lets the fabrics shine while offering just enough structure to add visual interest.

The pattern uses 3D Flying Geese that are much quicker to sew than a traditional Flying Geese block.

I loved how the pattern allowed me to showcase each whimsical print in the Cozy Bebe collection, from delicate florals to those darling little bears in overalls (a sweet nod to Corduroy, both the classic storybook character and my own pup 🐻🐶).

Meet the Fabric

Cozy Bebe by Simple Simon and Co for Riley Blake Designs

Soft blues, blush pinks, creamy oatmeal, and gentle greys form the Cozy Bebe fabric collection designed by Simple Simon and Co. for Riley Blake Designs. The prints are perfect for baby quilts, nursery decor, and soft sewing projects of all kinds.

Some of my favorite prints include:

  • Tiny starry skies for quiet bedtime vibes 🌙

  • Vintage florals for that nostalgic, handmade look

  • Bears in overalls that add just the right amount of whimsy

Quilting, Thread, and Finishing Touches

To add a soft, playful texture, I quilted the top using the Cottage Core pantograph by Sew Shabby Quilting. The design reminds me of nature sketches - airy, organic, and full of motion.

Here’s what I used:

  • Quilting Pantograph: Cottage Core designed by Sew Shabby Quilting

  • Piecing + Binding Thread: Aurifil 50 weight in 2026 (Chalk)

  • Quilting Thread: Aurifil 40/3 weight in 2600 (Dove)

  • Machine: Juki J-350 QVP for longarming

  • Batting: Two layers of bamboo batting for extra loft and warmth

Binding

Dilemma: Brown or Blue?

I couldn’t decide between a warm brown gingham or soft blue binding… so I asked my Instagram community to weigh in. (You always come through! ❤️) It can be so fun letting those finishing touches be a conversation. The final choice? I used both! It’s a little secret though. You’ll have to come back later for the full reveal of both. 😉

Sometimes I like to play with width, bias cuts, or even add a flange or curves—but this time I kept it simple. Machine-attached and mitered for a clean, classic finish.

Final Thoughts

The Front Porch Quilt in Cozy Bebe turned out to be such a lovely project. There’s something so personal about gifting a quilt. It carries warmth, time, and intention. I always imagine it becoming part of someone’s story, whether it’s cuddled under during story time or draped over the back of a nursery rocker.

If you’re planning your next baby quilt or looking for a beginner friendly pattern to try, I can’t recommend this combo enough.
